Do you believe in SustANGELS?

Wikipedia: According to four different polls conducted in 2009, a greater percentage of Americans believe in angels (55%) than those who believe in global warming (36%).^[74][75]

So, now that we now know global warming is real, clearly we need SustANGELS (Sustainability ANGELS) to help us out of this mess.

Who are SustANGELS?

SustANGELS are special messengers who come into our lives to protect us and  remind us to be Part of the Solution by bringing the Optimistic Truth into our daily thinking, (especially every 3 Finger Wednesday).

The Optimistic Truth is that by Thinking 3 Ways and living a Lifestyle Of Health, Happiness And Sustainability (LOHHAS) we can CHOOSE to CHANGE our destructive habits and current paths in life, and that it is OUR CHOICE to make.

SustANGELS know that if we truly care about balancing the needs of  Society, the Environment and the Economy, and change our wasteful ways, we can, with the help of Guardian SustANGELS everywhere, defeat the dark and oily forces from deep in the Earth and give ourselves and our children’s grandchildren a bright, sunny, renewable future.

Fortunately, in every civilization of mankind, angels have materialized to assist us in our decisions to do the right thing and defeat the evils of that era.

Today, the struggle between good and evil is not between heaven and hell, zombies and vampires, or between tribes and faiths ; the struggle is within ourselves, within our own lives, within our families, within our businesses, our communities and is now leading away from Peace, and becoming a dangerous struggle for resources between nations.

SustANGELS have arrived to help us win this insatiable battle between mankind’s unsustainable short-term greedy growth (over-consumption) vs. sustainable long-term conservation and care for each other’s health and happiness, on the only planet in the universe where we can live.

As with all Angels, SustANGELS come in many forms – winged, wingless, as ghostly apparitions, in dreams and in broad daylight - as flesh and blood strangers, and as friends and relatives. What all SustANGELS share is their CARE for people, the planet and our  sustainable prosperity.

Is about training the rich, how to be rich.

It’s not about training the poor how to make a little bag out of recycled material, it’s about training the rich ‘how to be rich’.. not to be rich in money, how to be rich in spirit, how to be rich in recognition, how to be rich in respect, from the community.

The nobility -  We call it the NRN – the New Rich Nobility – here in China, most of the people,  80% of the people who have money, have it since the last 10 years.

They don’t know how to be rich, this is not a negative comment, this is not saying they are not good in some way, it’s simply they have not got the system and they have not had the experience – this generation that is rich does not have Noblesse Oblige.

They don’t have the experience from the European heritage of nobility. So, we’re training them ‘how to be noble’ and that involves looking after those who are less fortunate than yourself.

Documentary about the life of Norman Bethune coming out in December..

“Here’s my Shameless Plug, in December, there’s a documentary appearing on CCTV, that’s the national TV here in China, on CCTV 9”

(pointing at photo) “and this is me, I play Norman Bethune, and Norman Bethune was a Canadian doctor that came to China in 1938 and helped in the anti-Japanese war, he was a medical doctor, he formed hospitals, trained doctors and so on.”

So we talk about “The Spirit of Bethune” and in the spirit of Bethune, Mao Zedong wrote about Bethune, the only foreigner Mao Zedong wrote about in his Little Red Book – he wrote about this man doing things for other people without compensation – he just did it because it was the right thing to do. So what we want to do is renew that spirit in China and of course around the world – that ‘It’s what you do for other people that makes the world go ‘round.’

How China Saved the World

Abstract

1. A pioneering approach to social habit change, focusing on achievable and manageable results. China, as the most populated country in the world and now with an escalating carbon footprint on par with Europe, has the greatest responsibility and is the greatest hope to lead a sustainable world. Additionally, China’s current 5 year plan includes an ambitious, difficult-to-quantify “happiness” quotient within its objectives which our project will aid in achieving.

2. Hardware, Software, Mindware. Government and industry are making improvements, but sending mixed messages to a consuming population generally unaware of the magnitude and personal consequences of the developing global crisis. The current success of the Peace Plus One – World Sustainability (Mindware) Project (PPO-WSP) is refining diverse “attractive” models to prepare early adopters among the mass population for transition to living in a resource depleted world, initiated by targeting and reframing the social models and social leader behaviours at the Individual Social Responsibility (ISR) level , focusing on mindfulness and engaging multiple-tier social fun and status enhancement, while gradually changing the criteria for status judgment, and rewarding the sustainability successes (ROI³) of the individual and their ability to harmonize and thrive within their society, common environment and their local economy.

In a combination of social perception management, historical recall, trend setting, meme management and positive psychology, the PPO-WSP. has developed specifically designed programs of social engagement (eg. SEE the T), observance discipline (eg. 3 Finger Wednesdays) and motivating rewards (eg. Miss LOHHAS) to provide a holistic ecosystem model for living a Lifestyle Of Health Happiness And Sustainability (LOHHAS).

Preparing the population for the inevitability of these economic and climate change crises and their consequences is the most crucial work since global mobilization during World War 2.

3. Targeting Practical, Longterm, Sustainable Behaviours. Since 2008 in Mainland China, the Peace Plus One World Sustainability Project has seen measurable growth and acceptance by the Chinese population, and possibly more importantly, the enthusiastic acceptance of the concept by local government leaders from Harbin to Haikou.

The Optimistic Truth is that individuals and governments appear to be seeking solutions and open to suggestions.

Working with famous Chinese NGO’s , an important and successful trial of the effect of the introduction of the 3 Finger “Sustainability Symbol” (modified for rural populations as “Tian Di Ren”) was staged in Chongquing / SiChuan/Wuxi in 2010. The project, Caravan Of Care, incorporates the unique approaches of the World Sustainability Project, in that the core effect of the procedure is to inform from a holistic systems perspective, specifically changing the behaviour and perception of the wealthy participants, rewarding altruism and generosity and changing the mindset on money and the unending material needs of the poor. This radical departure from failing social development models could prove be one of the quicker methods to kick-start sustainable decision-making and behaviours in China and around the world.

Biography

Philip McMaster, is a Canadian citizen and co-founder and Principal Researcher for the McMaster Institute for Sustainable Development in Commerce as well as founder of the Peace Plus One – World Sustainability Project, the World Sustainability Organization, and Caravan Of Care as well as the creator of the 3 Finger “Sustainability Symbol”.  McMaster has diplomas in Radio & Television Production,  undergraduate degrees in, Applied Human Sciences (Psychology, Biology & Sociology) and a graduate degree in Masters of Business Administration (MBA). One of the very few non-Chinese who has worked for the Chinese Government’s State Council  research arm - the Chinese Academy of Sciences  as a group manager in the  Research Center for Eco-Environmental Science. McMaster has taught Social Enterprise at some of the world’s top Universities, including MBA schools in Montreal, Canada  HEC and at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). McMaster is known as DaLong in China, was one of 17 individuals profiled during the 17 days of the Beijing Olympics (2008), has participated in the internationally acclaimed “TED Talks” series (2011) and in the summer of 2012 was honored to be invited to play the part of Dr. Norman Bethune in the CCTV documentary about the Canadian hero in China..

His interests include outdoor adventure, rollerblading,  innovation, entrepreneurship and 3D Film and Television Production as director of the international division of Chenduo Productions in Beijing.

A 3 Finger Salute to the first man to really SEE the Earth from the surface of the Moon.

Neil Armstrong was the first human to walk on the moon, and a man I had the honour to have lunch with here on Earth.  He died today, August 25th 2012.

I had lunch with Neil Armstrong and television host Laurier Lapierre in Vancouver Canada, when I worked at CKVU television many years ago.

The lunch was in the highest altitude restaurant we could find, closest to the moon.

As Laurier asked questions about the moon trip, I just remember listening to the mind-boggling story of space adventure being told by a very easy-going, unassuming, polite, “normal” guy who loved to fly.

At the end of the lunch, I asked Mr. Armstrong if I could have his signature - and he graciously wrote a nice note to me on CKVU TV letterhead. I have that signature stored away in papers somewhere in Canada.. I must find it as a keepsake from one of humanity’s most famous and reluctant heroes.

In the ’90’s, I was working in the aerospace / space launch industry, and although I never met Neil Armstrong again, I had many working visits to some of the places where Armstrong, Aldrin and Collins had trained to leave the Earth to go to the Moon, mostly Cape Canaveral and Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

In those days, working in the surprisingly small and interconnected circles of the aerospace industry, I met some people who Armstrong knew personally, but it wouldn’t be until my travels in China that I would meet Buzz Aldrin, one of Armstrong’s crewmates in the Lunar expedition.

This time, meeting Buzz Aldrin, I had an opportunity to introduce the 3 Fingers of Sustainability_\!/

I hope to also meet Jim Collins in the near future, as these living legends can inspire us to see our own lives in the bigger picture.

“One small step for man, one great leap for mankind”

-  inspiring words that galvanized the USA and the world to achieve an enormously difficult technological feat - allowing a selected, highly trained few humans from this lively, lonely planet to sail in a little tin can to a dead world for a few hours and then make it back home alive. Incredibly difficult - but for just a handful of people, with a huge economic cost. Our bonus: we worked out the life support technology to send 3 people at a time away from our natural life support system.

Now, what do we do with this technology? we need to revive that level of inspiration and turn the technology on ourselves. We have to make a really “great leap for mankind” - not to other dead worlds, but to a new set of behaviours, actions and the world-view of Earth itself as our only life-boat - treating our Societies, Environment and Economies with care and respect_\!/

I think Neil Armstrong, now winking back at us from the moon, would approve. He knew, as all travelers into cold, inhospitable space know,  that we humans must share a Lifestyle Of Health, Happiness And Sustainability (LOHHAS), and take Individual Social Responsibility (ISR) for the health of Spaceship Earth.  As the only humans to actually, physically leave the planet, those astronauts and cosmonauts truly realized that *their life depended on it*.

In sadness, but with fond memories and optimism for our future,

The Spirit of Bethune meets Spirit of Sustainability

I just returned to Beijing from Shanxi province and Hebei province, acting the role of Bethune in a CCTV (China Central Television, China’s State TV Network) documentary production about the life of Bethune in China. We shot two 30 minute episodes that will appear on Chinese television sometime in early 2013.

What would Bethune do?

At the end of the Linzhou video I use the phrase “Tian Di Ren”  which means “Heaven”, “Earth”, “People” and signifies the interdependency and interrelationship of all things.

Now we ask in the Chinese version of the World Sustainability Project, the question: “What would Bethune do?” as a motivator for local Chinese people (who revere the Bethune depicted in the CCTV documentary) to act in a balanced way - with Sustainable virtues and morals.

Here is what all Chinese school children learn about Bethune:

“Comrade Bethune’s spirit, his utter devotion to others without any thought of self, was shown in his great sense of responsibility in his work and his great warm-heartedness towards all comrades and the people … We must all learn the spirit of absolute selflessness from him. With this spirit everyone can be very useful to the people. A man’s ability may be great or small, but if he has this spirit, he is already noble-minded and pure, a man of moral integrity and above vulgar interests, a man who is of value to the people”  (In Memory of Bethune, Mao 1939, pp. 337–338) ”

I think it is time to refresh those values in addressing pollution, climate change, the evils of our resource giants and our unfulfilling consumer culture.

Commentary on the discovery of the so-called “GOD PARTICLE” on  3 Finger Wednesday, July 4^th 2012

2012 is truly the transitional year - not because the world will end with the Mayan calendar, but because a new world is being created by those who are waking up to the reality of our origin, our place and function on it.

The fact is that humans are NOT the reason the planet Earth exists - (although we may think we are the “conscience” of the planet and universe)  humans are just another species of animal on the planet, the first one that has the power to “play GOD” and change the physical nature of the planet itself.

But although we may individually act as if we were gods, we are not.

We create from the material, but we don’t create the material.

That is the question that was answered on 3 Finger Wednesday, July 4th - what creates mass in the universe?

It turns out to be the Higgs Boson, discovered at the CERN Large Hadron Collider, weighing in at 125.3 GeV or a  mass of about 125.3 billion electron volts.

Of course the universe will keep cycling along, happily, long after we’ve wiped ourselves off the planet and the GOD particle – the 125.3 GeV Higgs Boson in the Higgs field,  is not a god at all - only a process that started in the early moments of the BIG BANG and will keep on creating MASS and the material universe for infinity.

So now we humans can stop fighting each other on behalf of our spiritual beliefs. No more “my god vs your god”.

The mystery has been revealed, the curtain has been pulled back. There are no tricks, no special distinctions, connections, relationships or skills attributed to knowing the GOD Particle and what materializes the universe - true, it is it an important particle in Physics Standard Theory, but it’s still just a mechanical process and interaction with the Higgs field. So we humans are not as special as we think we are. There is no other entity thinking exclusively about us. The universe was not created by any one separate entity who favours any individual, group or mind , but is, instead, continually created by a subatomic process that continues to be the creation of everything. Yes, we  are truly are ONE with the whole universe. There is only ONE process creating life, and that is the universe itself.

OK, so what then is the meaning of life? If our human existence (and consciousness) was just an evolutionary accident of the BIG BANG, why are we here?

The answer is simple. Life force.

Humans arose on this lonely planet by lucky chance, a sort of “Lucky Lottery” win with big brains, self-consciousness, opposable thumbs etc. – and now that we’ve invented human reasons and technologies to war with each other, invented exclusively human excuses and systems to control and dominate each other (language, money, education, economics, racism, sexism) we’ve finally unleashed our selfish, hungry, human life force of 7 billion on the whole planet. .. And we still have to learn that Life is not a right, it’s an opportunity and obligation.

It’s time to WAKE UP and be grateful for the chance to play.

Nature, life force and the Higgs Boson are not  human concepts or decisions, We are part of natures life force and created by the Higgs Boson and its interaction with the Higgs field.

THE LOTTERY

Having won the lottery and roulette game for the 7 billion of us to be alive today, it’s now up to us to live within the Casino House rules - we can keep playing in the game as long as the House (our planet) always wins – of course we can win too, we have been winning to the demise of other species for a million years, but now, on the eve of our own potential self-destruction, many are realizing that the Casino House is calling in the bets – withdrawing our credit – not supporting our promises and speculation, but instead insisting on peace, balance and harmony if we want to stay.

This important - it changes many things

The announcement of the probable discovery of the Higgs Boson after 50 years of searching is more important than many realize. It is the end of the world where superstition, oppression, excuses, and human-centric domination will be tolerated by the planet itself.

The probable discovery of the so-called “God Particle” at an energy value of 125.3 GeV confirms that humans have no special relationship with the universe, but must work on and earn our relationships with each other and the planet. 

We are simply another beautiful expression of frequency and lifeforce of the universe, with the unique, conscious opportunity and imperative to live a Lifestyle Of Health, Happiness And Sustainability - and we must play by the only rules that really matter, nature’s rules.
