On Sunday August 17th another group of rollerbladers (in-line skaters) prepared to cruise the streets around the Olympic Green in Beijing to share the message and adopted symbol of the “GREEN OLYMPICS”.

The group met at one of the hundreds of OLYMPIC VOLUNTEER INFORMATION KIOSKS wearing their “Peace Plus One” T-shirts, and heading off to the Olympic Park.

At the National Aquatic Center (the WaterCube) the Climate Change Agents played games of frisbee on rollerblades,

…and took many photographs with hundreds of people who were wondering what the 3 finger symbol means.

T-Shirts were signed and each person who learned about the meaning of the 3 finger symbol was asked to share it with 3 other people and given a small gift.

Chanting “GO China, GO Beijing, GO Green Olympics” the Climate Change Agents skated to the Olympic Village stopping at Olympic Volunteer Stations along the way….

some skated on one skate… … and others required minor first aid from the local Urban Volunteer Service Station … where Olympic Volunteers are always ready to help people, share the 3 finger Peace Plus One Sustainability Symbol and promote a GREEN OLYMPICS!

Arriving at the Olympic Athletes Village, Climate Change Agents shared the “Peace Plus One” GREEN OLYMPICS symbol with many international athletes from Guinea-Bissau, Great Britain, Canada, Australia and many other countries….

… the athletes signed the special “Peace Plus One” T-Shirts worn by the Climate Change Agents…

…throughout the activity, the Climate Change Agents  supported and promoted each other, including a “graduation” and certifying ceremony where everyone certifies everyone else’s status as an Official Climate Change Agent by signing their “Peace Plus One” T-Shirt!

… to wrap up the adventure, a group photo in front of the Olympic Village Sign, with everyone tired, but happy to accomplish so much in just a few hours!

The last stop was a big Chinese dinner and celebration for the Climate Change Agents, thanking everyone for the hard work and enthusiasm to share the message of the 3 finger “Peace Plus One” Sustainability Symbol and promotion of the GREEN OLYMPICS in China.

Climate Change Agent Nick summed up the effort to Stop Global Warming with 3 fingers - by thinking about what we are doing, and use the 3 fingers of the “Peace Plus One” Sustainability Symbol to remind us to care for

1.) Society, 2.) the Environment and 3.) the Economy…

Global Climate Change Ambassador Freddy Law, from Hong Kong.

Freddy learned about the 3 finger Sustainability Symbol as an organizer of an AIESEC Conference on Student Leadership (hosted at Hong Kong Polytechnic University in 2007) where he and hundreds of Climate Change Agents from around the world learned how to share the concepts behind the 3 finger Sustainability Symbol.

Freddy was appointed NATIONAL CLIMATE CHANGE AMBASSADOR for Hong Kong SAR for his enthusiasm and creativity in sharing the 3 finger Sustainability Symbol and the deep meaning and methodologies behind sustainability.

Since that time, Freddy has been traveling the world,  working for Google in India, AIESEC and helping Students around the world find internships in exciting companies in exotic locations.

Freddy has now become a GLOBAL CLIMATE CHANGE AMBASSADOR for the Institute,  because he shares a global perspective,  always keeps in touch with the Institute, tells us about his adventures and how he is sharing the meaning of the 3 finger Sustainability Symbol with everyone he meets, in Asia, Europe, South America and around the world.

The recent HAVAS media report on global consumer attitudes contains some startling contradictions to common perceptions.  Below is the China Factsheet of the report -

CHINESE PEOPLE ARE FOCUSED ON ADDRESSING CLIMATE CHANGE

-  46% of Chinese respondents can be classed as eco-absorbed. The eco-absorbed are those who are very focused on the issue of climate change and China has the fourth-highest proportion in the world - behind Brazil (58%), Mexico (56%) and India (50%) but far ahead of countries such as Germany (15%) and the UK (17%)

CHINESE CITIZENS ARE RESPONSIBLE PEOPLE

-  Only 12% of Chinese are eco-apathetic, compared to 34% in the UK and US and 32% in Germany. The eco-apathetic typically marginalise the issue of climate change, recognising the concept but sharing none of the responsibility.

CHINESE PEOPLE UNDERSTAND CHANGE & SACRIFICE IS REQUIRED FOR THE GREATER GOOD

-  91% of Chinese respondents agree that tackling the issue of climate change means changing the way we live our lives.

93% OF CHINESE CITIZENS BELIEVE THEY CAN BE PART OF THE SOLUTION (3 fingers! Yay!)

-  91% of Chinese people agree that climate change will affect them and their family, and 93% believe they can contribute to solving the problem, making China the second most positive country in the report in terms of its willingness to change.

WILLING TO SWITCH AWAY FROM PROBLEM MAKERS

-  56% of Chinese respondents would be more likely to buy environmentally-friendly goods in the next 12 months if they were at the same price and standard as their usual brands. 38% would be willing to pay a little extra for those goods.

LOYALTY TO SOLUTION MAKERS

-  93% of Chinese people would rather buy from companies that are trying to reduce their contribution to global warming – the most emphatic score in the report.

GOVERNMENT IS A PART OF THE SOLUTION

-  66% of Chinese respondents agree that their government is making a significant effort to combat climate change – the highest proportion in the survey.

BURNING OIL, BURNING MAD

-  The Chinese believe the oil and fuel sector is the most damaging of all economic sectors in terms of the environment, while media and telecoms is perceived to be the least damaging.

In the modern-day ”Spirit of Bethune” (a Canadian doctor, revered in China, if you didn’t know already..) here are some fun images of “Cool to be Canadian” founder Philip McMaster who now lives in Beijing.

After the successes of “Cool to be Canadian”, a non-profit organization founded in 1992, Philip has a new world mission that he has started in China - the focus is SUSTAINABILITY, and the method is sharing the 3 finger “Peace Plus One” Sustainability Symbol.

Philip often wears his ”Cool to be Canadian Maple Leaf Hat”  to draw attention to the “Peace Plus One” 3 finger message of Canadians and others in the world who are “part of the solution” - supporting Peace, Unity (One-ness) and a Lifestyle Of Health And Sustainability (LOHAS) to save the one world we share.

On Monday, an earthquake of unimaginable proportions hit and saddened a country preparing to joyously welcome the world in August for the Olympics. As of this post, the death toll exceeds 12,000, (22,000 confirmed as of Saturday) with many of the dead, children and students who were in school at the time

This is another undeserved blow to China at a time when the whole world should be celebrating the work the Chinese people have put into preparing to host the world.

 NOW is the time for people outside China to start appreciating what’s going on here, and start to be part of the solution, not the problem.

 A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman on Tuesday welcomed the international community’s aid to China’s relief efforts, but added that sending rescue teams or supplies was impractical -

“At this point, transportation in affected areas is still blocked and it is impossible even for our own rescue teams to reach the disaster-hit areas,” he said.
