How to make the Circular Economy work… 3 fingers at a time!
Last week I made a presentation to the “2008 Beijing International Symposium on Ecological Restoration” in Mentougou (Eastern part of Beijing) . I was a guest of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and met many interesting people from around the world who are experts in Ecological Restoration (Putting the environment back to a more natural state).
I was offered the opportunity to make 2 presentations, the original one on the introduction of the 3 finger hand gesture meme - the Peace Plus One “Sustainability Symbol”.. and the other on Business Incubation in areas being restored. For the first I chose to prepare a description of the www.Dragonpreneur.com framework that we developed in Hong Kong a few years ago, and for the last, “Preparing for the Circular Economy - The Sustainability Symbol - a memeplex to engage individual consumer and community support - balancing the needs of Society, Environment and Economy”.
The 2008 Beijing International Symposium on Ecological Restoration was held in Mentougou, a peri-urban area on the Western side of Beijing.
The most impressive presentation was the last one - just before the conference ended, when there was the opportunity to introduce the personal decision-making tool - the 3 Finger symbol, as a personal reminder and a means of balancing and harmonizing Society, Environment, and Economy in our daily decisions. Just in time to prepare the population for participating and operating effectively and efficiently in a “Circular Economy”.
The Circular Economy Promotion Law comes into effect in China on January 1st, 2009, and is a landmark legislation in the world - certainly the largest country in the world to commit to re-fitting its industry and economy to operate in a sustainable way.
Importantly, my proposal and introduction of a “Sustainability Day” - the 3rd day of the week (Wednesday) met with great interest, as a day-of-the-week when we focus our thinking on balance, harmony and sustainability.
Finally, I had the opportunity to restate an earlier proposal delivered through the Chinese Academy of Sciences to the Beijing government in conjunction with Professor Rusong Wang, to re-purpose the existing Olympic information kiosks located throughout the Olympic cities in China, and to utilize the existing infrastructure and volunteer organization to become “LOHAS information centers” and collection points for used eyeglasses, batteries and cellphones.
