HONG KONG -
“Now or Never” was the theme of the International
Conference on Climate Change held at the Hong Kong Convention and
Exhibition Centre May 29th to 31st 2007.
The ICCC 2007 brought together prominent experts from 26 countries and
territories around the world including Argentina, Australia,
Bangladesh, Canada, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Hungary, India,
Iran, Ireland, Malaysia, Mauritius, Mongolia, Netherlands, New Zealand,
Nigeria, Romania, Sierra Leone, Sweden, Singapore, Thailand, UK, USA
and Zimbabwe
Just prior to the closing speech by Hong Kong Chief Executive Donald
Tsang, Philip McMaster, founder of the McMaster Institute for Sustainable Commerce and Honorary Project Director at the Center for Entrepreneurship, Chinese University of Hong Kong, had the opportunity to speak briefly to the assembled delegates.
Mr. McMaster spoke of his recent experience of presenting to 9 & 10 year olds at Kowloon Junior School, a departure from his teaching university students and MBA’s

McMaster makes presentations at local schools because he is concerned that the kids worry too much about problems that they didn’t create.
In his brief comments to the conference, he said that the kids were very knowledgeable about the issues of climate change and global warming,
but that it was the adults that are having difficulty facing up to
their responsibilities.
Mentioning his use of the McMaster Institute’s “Sustain-o-Meter” and “Secret Symbol of Sustainability”, he asked the delegates to consider adopting DragonThink”, an approach to balanced thinking based on considering Social, nvironmental and Economic impacts in everyday decisions.
Dr. Gail Kendall, Director, Group Environmental Affairs, CLP Holdings Limited told Mr. McMaster that she had introduced her young son to DragonThink and the Secret Symbol of Sustainabilty and he excitedly incorporated it into school projects he was working on.
Kurt Yeager, Chair of the World Energy Council’s Study on Energy and Climate Change was impressed with the power and simplicity of the DragonThink effort and commended Mr. McMaster for his efforts, saying he would bring it back to the US and introduce the idea to his colleagues.
Professor Ru-Song Wang, Research Professor at the Research Center for Eco-Environmental Sciences of The Chinese Academy of Sciences and Vice-Director, Scientific Committee on Problems of the Environment, International Council for Science wanted to learn more about the DragonThink campaign and its possible introduction into Mainland China.
ICCC International Advisory Committee member Nick Dean, Vice-Consul
(Political & Economic) of British Consulate-General in Hong Kong, was an ‘early adopter’ of DragonThink and the Secret Symbol of Sustainability during the ICCC conference, believing there was a place for a unifying educational effort beyond political and special interest groups.
John Baxter, Group Engineering Director at BP sees value in changing minds through
DragonThink…. enough that he considered bringing the Secret Symbol of Sustainability back to Britain.
Stephen IP, Secretary of the Economic Development and Labour Bureau, Hong Kong SAR Government had been exposed to the Secret Symbol when Philip McMaster introduced it and the “Sustainable New Years Pig” to Hong Kong earlier in 2007.
